PASTORAL CARE COMMISSION:
The Commission believes that no one needs to be alone. As a parish family, we can
provide many things- from visits by a friend in Christ to transportation for medical care
or to church, to meals for those in need of this assistance. As a member the parish, one
becomes part of the ST.Luke's family. When a need arises, member of this commission
often joined by other members of the parish provide assistance.

MEALS MINISTRY: Members of this group prepare and deliver meals to anyone in the
parish who is in a medical or bereavement crisis. This ministry has up to 25 members
who are ready to provide this short-term service. A call to the church office will initiate
this ministry.
PRAY-ERS: Prayer works! St Luke's pray-ers (intercessors) pray for our church and
many other people/situations. Daily, our prayer warriors offer intercessory prayer with
God for other's needs. One of the many incredible answers to prayer was a concern for a
teen involved in a terrible care accident, suffering extreme head injuries and other serious
injuries. He is now back in school when doctors had not even expected him to live.
Praise God!
VOLUNTEER DRIVERS: From time to time, parishioners are unable to drive
themselves to weekend worship services or to St.Luke's events. Volunteer drivers are
available to drive members in need of transportation to church. Often these rides result in
visiting those who are not getting out as they once did. If you find yourself in need of
transportation, please make it known to the Church office. Awful thoughts are sent by
card to parishioners who are in need of healing for mind, body and spirit. Birthdays and
anniversaries are remembered with a greeting from the St. Lukes family.
FUNERAL RECEPTIONS: Several teams of hosts and hostesses are on call to provide
receptions in the Parish Hall following funerals. Depending on the family's wishes, the
teams can provide a "sweet" reception of cookies, cheese and crackers, tea and coffee. A
"sandwich" reception which is also offered includes lovely sandwiches, desserts, cheese
and cracker trays, as well as tea, coffee and a light cool drink. Extra hands are always
welcome as baker, servers or cleanup crew. Both men and women are welcome to
participate. A minimal charge covers the cost of the food.
SUNSHINE MINISTRY: Prayful thoughts are sent by card to parishioners who are in
need of healing for mind, body and spirit. Birthdays and anniversaries are remembered
with a greeting from the St. Luke's family. .
CARING THRU SHARING: People in need of food or gasoline are given vouchers
through the church office.
TEMPORARY EMERGENCY HOUSING: Housing is provided for people in need at
times of national or local disaster; i.e., fire or flooding. An up to date directory is kept in
the church office of parishioner offering housing.
LAY EUCHARISTIC MINISTER: A lay person authorized to take the Consecrated
Elements in a timely manner following a Celebration of Holy Eucharist to members of
the congregation who, by reason of illness or infirmity, were unable to be present at the
Celebration. A Lay Eucharistic Minister should normally act under the direction of a
Deacon, if any, or otherwise the member of the Clergy exercising oversight of the
congregation. A Lay Eucharistic Minister must be a confirmed adult communicant in
good standing: a member of the parish, a regular communicant and be a giver of record.
St. Luke's is blessed to have a wonderful team of committed, caring and loving Lay
Eucharistic Ministers. Those in this special ministry are licensed by our Rector.
Oversight is provided by the Deacon.
LICENSED LAY PASTORAL CARE LEADERS: The Book of Common Prayer asks,
"Who are the ministers of the Church?" The answers: "the ministers are the lay
persons, Bishop, Priests and Deacons." The ministers are God's People, so everything
one does has the possibility for transformation and newness of life.
Pastoral Care is the way we express the love of Christ to one another as we walk
together through life's ups and downs. At St. Luke's, the Licensed Lay Pastoral Care
Leaders are representative of the Church, carry the care of the Church with them, are
used by God to connect those they visit with the larger Body of Christ, provide a ministry
of presence, a ministry of healing and offer a ministry of hope.
The Licensed Lay Pastoral Care Leaders have completed a formal training program and
have been licensed by the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Arizona.
